ENCAUSTIC WORKSHOPS

Contemporary Techniques in Encaustic. Participating artists will learn solvent-free approaches to working and painting safely with encaustic wax.  This medium is compatible with drawing, oil painting and sculpture. Learning will be primarily hands-on with ample demonstrations covering traditional and contemporary methods.  No prior experience in encaustic is necessary.

Collage, Assemblage, 3D & Experimental focuses on the adhesive and structural nature of wax.   Encaustic waxes can be used to integrate different materials, both two and three dimensional.  Its structural properties also allow the wax itself to be cast, carved, textured, built up in relief and modeled. Basic core of encaustic information will covered during which time those more with prior encaustic experience can choose to work independently

Encaustic Image Transfer and Gold Leaf concentrates on transferring and layering personal imagery onto/into the wax. This class includes techniques on working with involve imitation gold leaf, carbon paper, and graphite transferring. A copy machine will be available to assist with your projects. Encaustic waxes and equipment are included.

Independent Studio and Medium Making.  Forthose who already have experience with encaustic and wish to work independently for the most part. There will be technical instruction on an as needed basis.  During this time I will demonstrate the making of wax medium which will be available for purchase at the end of the day.

Mini Workshops provide information on a particular technique(s) or can be formatted as an overview of encaustic. These sessions are ideal for the artist who wishes to learn more about encaustic in a one-on-one type atmosphere.  Most of the materials and equipment are provide.  They are scheduled on an as needed basis.  Please see the subheading below: Mini Workshops below

Open Studio: Encaustic artists may work unassisted on small works, any day of the week based on studio reservations. This Open Studio is available for artists who have worked with encaustic but do not have the space or the equipment in their own shops.  See below for details.  Deadline: Ongoing

Workshops run from 10am – 5pm.  This will include a 1 hour lunch break if you wish. Coffee & tea + light foods such as fruit, cheese and crackers will be provided during this time unless otherwise stated.  You are welcome to bring a more substantial lunch.  A microwave and refrigerator are available for your use.

This workshop will focus on the printing and transferring of imagery into the skin of the wax. The basic core of encaustic techniques and safety information will be taught during the first half which will include translucencies, gold leaf, sgraffito and oil & wax. No prior experience with encaustic is necessary.

Image Layering, Collage & Drawing in Wax
Sat., April 26 (WPN-08)
Discover the translucent and opaque nature of wax and its ability to show
depth. Techniques covered will include collage, image layering, combining
oil and wax, glazing, scraping and scribing and various ways of drawing in
wax. The basic core of encaustic technique and safety information will be
covered, but certain techniques will be emphasized and demonstrated in more
detail. No prior experience with encaustic is necessary.

Intm/Adv
Encaustic Image Transfer and Gold Leaf
Sun., April 27 (WPN-09)
Begin with the Encaustic Basics and move on to concentrate on transferring
and layering personal imagery onto/into the wax. Imitation gold leaf, carbon
paper, and graphite transferring will be some of the techniques covered. A
copy machine will be available to assist with your projects. Encaustic waxes
and equipment are included. Not for beginners. Class requirement:
completing one other class in encaustic.

with this medium. Those with prior working knowledge of encaustic may choose to use
this time to work independently. After the ground work has been completed, the class
continues in its chosen technical focus.

•Prior to class, a materials list is available with both necessary and optional items to bring.
•A one week R&F purchase discount will be available upon completion of any workshop.


MINI WORKSHOPS

These sessions are for one or two.  Most of the materials and equipment are provided. 
You will need to bring panels to paint on plus brushes.  Mini Workshops are available
on an ongoing basis by appointment only.  Paints & equipment included during class time.

OPEN STUDIO PROGRAM

Encaustic artists may work unassisted on small works, any day of the week based on
studio reservations.  I will offer a short orientation to the studio.  Waxes, paints and
heating equipment are included in the $40/hr fee for one person, $25/hr fee for 2 or more. 
You will need to provide your own painting panels/supports and brushes.  It is required that
you return the workstation to its original order.   This Open Studio is available for artists
who have worked with encaustic but do not have the space or the equipment in their own shops.

August 10th - 13th
Contemporary Techniques in Encaustic

Participating artists will learn contemporary, solvent-free approaches to painting and working with wax. Learning will be primarily hands-on. There will be ample demonstrations covering traditional and current techniques of painting and how this may interact with collage, image transfer, monoprinting and casting. No prior experience is necessary.
August 14th - 17th
Assemblage & Collage with Encaustic

August 19 th – August 21st
Image Layering and Transferring

will emphasizes the translucent and opaque nature of wax and its ability to show depth. Techniques covered will include image transfer, combining oil and wax, glazing, scraping and scribing. This class is also excellent for those who love drawing. In addition it will include a section on gold leaf. The basic core of encaustic technique and safety information will be covered, but certain techniques will be emphasized and demonstrated in more detail. No prior experience with encaustic is necessary.

Deposits: $285 deposit will reserve your place.

Balance: Payment in Full will be due July1st, 2008.

A materials list such as painting supports, brushes, and optional miscellaneous items e.g.
drawings, interesting papers etc will be sent at this time. Cancellations and refunds: If you
have to withdraw from the class, 6 weeks notice is required prior to the onset. In this case
you will get a refund less $30 administrative costs. A minimum of 5 participants will be
needed to run this workshop. If there are not enough registrants 6 weeks prior to the onset
of the workshop, the class will be canceled and your deposit will be returned to you. To
